Trendsetting Textiles of 2018

Like many of you, I am a self-proclaimed fabricoholic, never missing an opportunity to stop at a showroom to view a new textile collection, get up close to see the woven fibers and dream of the different ways in which I could use different colorways in my current and future projects. Whether it is a natural or human-made product, I truly appreciate the evolution of the textile industry. After all, the industry has come a long way in the past 100 years.

My design studio is located in a typical small town with a population around 22,000, at least an hour away from any large design center. Although at my current location I will never proclaim to be a design center myself I believe we do a pretty good job keeping up with the latest trends and techniques. After spending countless hours each season sourcing fabrics and we outfit the storefront studio with the newest textile creations to bring a little of the big city to our small town. After taking an afternoon to visit the HUGE design center in Minneapolis the first week in March, I was able to recognize a few continuing trends and some more on the cusp of being a big hit for interiors.

Natural, organic fiber content continues to be a trend. From neutrals to soft pastels to deep indigo there is a color for everyone. Looser weaves for drapery and tighter weaves for both drapery and upholstery. These fabrics can lend everything from a formal feel to a relaxed atmosphere depending on how and where they are applied.

Leathers and vinyl are being used not only for furniture, but pillows, walls, tables, and other accessories. Paired with another texture like metal these fabrics add a glamorous atmosphere to a room.

Trims, tapes, tassels, poms, and fringe. A piece just does not seem to be complete without adding that creative touch to an otherwise simple item.

Bright graphic prints in reds, blues, and yellows. Perhaps this is a precursor to Summer. Nonetheless a welcome sight to the dull environment the Wintertime brings.

Anything with fur, sequins, sparkle or sheen (my personal favorites) seem to be gaining a great deal of popularity. Although this trend will likely be adopted sparingly due to the daring commitment, I encourage you to introduce in subtle ways with pillows, trims, small furniture, tile or lighting to achieve approval from your mainstream clients.

I look forward to attending the International Window Coverings Expo in a week to continue my ongoing research.
